The overflow of crappy movies recently has kept me away even from Nepali Cinesansar. Anyway, upon constant request of the director Pradeep Shrestha, I had to watch last friday release – ‘Sapana’, starring Nandita K.C., Rajesh Hamal, Arjun Karki, Sunil Dutt and Aryan Sigdel in lead roles. Before I stepped into the theater with complimentary tickets, I had asked the director is it once again copy of old Hindi movie ‘Sadma’, which Bhuvan K.C. had made into Sapana in early 90s?
He said its completely different, novel script and much better.
Well, its easily said than done. Actually, I was so disappointed with the makers of the movie – copying almost all of the popular Bollywood love traingles from the past. It had the subplots from everywhere – Sadma, Deewana, Saajan, Chalte Chalte and most prominently Sangam .
The movie centers on Nadita K.C. who plays a role of Sapana. She dreams of prince charming on the horse saving her from all evils and finally making her princess of his heart. Exactly, similar incident happens in reality. She meets Captain Dipak (Arjun Karki) who saves her from trouble and takes her in his helicopter. Then there is Raj (Aryan Sigdel), who had been loving Sapna for a long time, while Sapana thinks of him as a good friend only. There is also Krishna (Rajesh Hamal), who has been constantly giving advice to Raj to express his true love, before its late. Rajesh’s role reminds you of role of Jhonny Lever from the movie Chalte Chalte.
Anyway, moving ahead with the story, after the helicopter incident Sapana & Dipak falls in love and ties knot within two days. Unfortunately, ten days after then marriage the sad news of Dipak’s accident and death comes. Suddenly Sapana’s dream (Sapana) gets shattered. Once again its Raj who had loved her since day one, helps her to get along with her life. Sapana too realizes, Raj loves her so she finally agrees to get married to her real prince in charming, who has been helping her in every step of her life. Krishna is also happy, finally his mentoring worked.
On the day of Raj & Sapana’s marriage, Captain Dipak resurfaces. He had met an accident but had survived.
Now, Sapana is torn between two people; one her husband, whom she thought was already dead, another to be husband.
Whom will she choose?
The script has reminisce of old Raj Kapoor, Vyjantimala., Rajendra Kumar starrer super hit Bollywood movie Sangam. To some extent the subplots coincides with even Shahrukh Khan, Divya Bharati, Rishi Kapoor starrer ‘Deewana’. So, there is nothing which could be said as novel or path breaking in terms of story, screenplay. Even dialogues are pretty predictable like the storyline. Unfortunately, unlike the originals, the copy(script) writer seems to have written the script in haste which leaves many loopholes in the story.
Where as, in terms of music and lyrics, the movie does have some melodious numbers and score some brownie points. There is nothing worth mentioning regarding Choreography and Cinematography.
Performance wise, despite getting such meaty role, Nandita K.C. disappoints. She couldn’t do justice to the character that she way playing. She lacks the ability to emote through expressions. Aryan as always does take the mediocre movie to next level, also Sunil Dutt, as a negative role has done some commendable job.
Overall, due to the predictable storyline, not so powerful performance, the movie might end up becoming average to below average grosser in the box office.
As for my two cents, I would give not more than 2 stars out of 5, considering good music and performances of some of the cast members.
