Unsuccessful Cinema, Successful Actor

In Nepali Cinesansar the line between success and failure seems blurred due to media over hype, lies and deceitful earning reports even by multiplex box offices. Each and every movie maker’s claims his movie is doing excellent business during first few days and suddenly starts crying within a week or two claiming around 50-80% loss. Also in Nepali Cine Sansar, critical acclaim have hardly made any difference in the movie business, it seems only person who gets success from an unsuccessful cinema is the leading actor. Topping the charts for more than two decades in terms of remuneration despite numerous duds is none other than Rajesh Hamal.

Last year 2067 saw strings of flops for Rajesh Hamal, still he is the black horse for the producers to bet upon. In a recent interview he even shamelessly said;

2067 might have not been good year for Nepali Cine Sansar, but for me it has been successful due to some hefty endorsements and huge inflow of cash with more than 15 releases in a year.

Every week or two we could see a movie with Rajesh, be it small cameo or guest role or even supporting roles. He was like a brand ambassador for Nepali Cinema or like some lucky charm. Despite no hits under his belt in 2067, producers are expecting this year will be exceptional for Rajesh and the movie which he has acted in. Though, the quantity of his releases will definitely be much low than last year, as film production has gone down this year due to hefty loss last year due to clash of multiple releases.

To being with this year, Rajesh’s Dus Gaja has already hit the screens. Though it got tepid response in the multiplexes within the Valley, it is getting some audience outside the Valley which might make it average to below average movie in terms of collection. That means not total loss.

After ‘Dus Gaja’, Rajesh will be seen in Jay Shiva Shankhar, which is an average action-comedy masala. After that, he will be consecutive release of three different movies; Sahashi, Dulahi and Hath Lagyo Sunya. The USP of each movie is its characterization of the main lead, i.e. Rajesh Hamal.

In Sahashi Rajesh will be seen as Guru of Martial Arts – ‘Taichi’. Director Basudev Pokharel, the director of the movie Sahashi claims, Rajesh will show some of unbeliviable martial art stunts which audience have never seen their favourite actor perform before. Another director Baburam Dhakal is expecting his movie Dulahi will get grand reception, as rumor about Rajesh getting married will help the movie Dulahi. Rajesh will be seen getting married on the screen in the movie. Debutant director Bijay Bikram Basnet is quite optimistic of his comedy movie Hath Lagyo Sunya, where Rajesh is playing a greedy Terai penny pincher character.

Director Pradeep Shrestha’s Sapana is also in line for release where Rajesh play a pivotal role. After these movies, he still has some movie in his kitty which might or might not release this year. At this age too, Rajesh is still going strong in terms of getting the movies. It’s different topic, whether that movie works or not.
