Political turmoil and scarcity of essential elements for daily life have hit hard to entertainment industry. The country where there is still 14 hours load shedding of electricity, 1 hour tap water in a week that too not the pure one how can one think about entertainment. To worsen the situation, fuel shortage has forced people to become a couch potato.
Last Friday release Dus Gaja, was one movie that both the audience and critics has been looking forward to, but unfortunately it didn’t turn out to be what it was expected to be. Directed by dream merchant Dayaram Dahal, the movie delves with the latest issue of India crossing over their territory (and no man’s land) to take over Nepali land. Even before its shooting the movie went under fire from different political parties backed by Indian Embassy and Government. After numerous cuts ran by censor scissors and various premier shows around the nation the movie finally hit the screen last Friday.
Despite the big names in the industry like Rajesh Hamal, Nikhil Uprety, Subhadra Adhikary, etc the movie didn’t attract the viewers in the first place. Distributors and theater owners have claimed the poor reception is the result of current national crisis of electricity, petroleum products, water, etc.
Well, that may be true for once as current mental state of audience cannot be entertainment after that entire crisis prevailing in their life. Electricity, Water, Petrol, Security, Sanitation, Pollution, everything seems like privilege for people living in Nepal.
Had the movie been about romance or comedy lower working class audience would have visited the cinema at least to get away from their reality for a while, but the movie was promoted as an out and out political patriotic movie. People are already fed up listening to political leaders talk about national sovereignty, patriotism and live life completely opposite bowing down against the same people whom they criticize.
Was it intended or was cut by censor board, the movie does not provide a concrete and realistic solution to current land sharking attempts made by India. How can and should people fight against that problem is not clearly depicted in the movie. The movie divulges more upon the problems than providing some kind of solution.
Whatever might be the box-office collection, but we definitely have to praise Dayaram Dahal Sir for at least trying something different than regular Rakha Thapa style action-comedy-glamour movies.
